Why a Dyson vacuum cleaner is the most effective for people with asthma and allergies

Most ordinary vacuum cleaners can’t retain all the dirt and dust they pick up – some is expelled out of the machine and back into the air. Dyson vacuums use Radix Cyclone™ technology and are more than 99.9% efficient at separating dust and dirt. Dyson cyclones can capture particles down to 0.5 microns (approximately 200 times smaller in diameter than human hair) – including pollen, mould and bacteria.

3. Protective mesh
Cleaner air passes through a second protective mesh.

2. PTFE filter with HEPA performance
Air passes through a PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) filter, which is 99.97% efficient at removing particles as small as 0.3 microns.

1. Protective mesh
Allergen-laden air is drawn into the filter through a protective mesh.

National Asthma Council Australia approvalNational Asthma Council Australia

Dyson barrel, upright and compact vacuum cleaners have been approved by the National Asthma Council Australia's Sensitive Choice program. This program was developed to help people with asthma and allergies choose products that are ideal for their lifestyle.

Asthma Foundations Australia

Dyson is the only floorcare company to partner with Asthma Foundations Australia. The main purpose of this alliance is to raise funds and awareness of the importance of asthma management in the community.

Dust and allergies

Most common allergic reactions are triggered by dust mites and their faeces, pollen, fungus, fibres, food particles, pet hair and dander, and insecticides – all ingredients that make up household dust. Because a Dyson vacuum doesn’t lose suction, it removes more of these triggers from the home with every clean.

Clean expelled air

Radix Cyclone™ technology uses powerful centrifugal forces to extract particles as small as bacteria. Dyson's most advance Radix Cyclone™ technology + Intermediary cyclone captures more microscopic dust than any other cyclone. Dyson cyclones can capture particles down to 0.5 microns (approximately 200 times smaller in diameter than human hair) – including pollen, mould and bacteria.

HEPA filter

Some Dyson barrel, upright and compact vacuum cleaners have a sealed HEPA (High-Efficiency Particle Air) filter - the same filters used by hospitals – to capture particles as small as 0.1 microns. That’s equivalent to a single particle of cigarette smoke. Particles this small include common household allergens such as pollen, mould spores and dust mite faeces.

Dyson microbiology lab

Dyson has its own microbiology lab at its Research, Design and Development centre in the United Kingdom.

Here a team of Dyson scientists study household dust and dirt, in all its forms. A lot of the work they do involves house dust mites (Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus), one of the most common triggers of asthma and allergies. They keep them in colonies, feeding them a ground-up mixture of wheat germ and dog biscuit in ideal temperature conditions (25°C and 75% relative humidity).

The research conducted in our lab helps Dyson develop new and better ways of removing them from your home.
