How to Reduce Frizz: Dyson Frizz Control Tips

July 27, 2026

From thick and curly to fine and straight, frizz is a universal hair care concern across all hair types. While frizz can feel unpredictable – and sometimes, inevitable – the way you wash, dry, and style your hair plays a major role in the smoothness of your strands.

From your first wash to your finished style, each step of your hair care routine plays a crucial role in giving your hair the hydration it needs to prevent frizz.

At Dyson, we’ve spent years engineering our hair care technology with intelligent heat control and and precise airflow to help protect hair from heat damage – one of the major contributors of frizz.

In this guide, discover how to avoid frizzy hair with hydrating hair care products, heat protection, gentle hair habits, and Dyson frizz control technology.

What causes frizz?
Frizz hair often comes down to a lack of moisture. In healthy, well-hydrated hair, the cuticles (the outer layer of each strand) lie flat in a scale-like pattern on the hair shaft. When your hair becomes dry, it causes cuticles to ‘lift’ and draw moisture from the surrounding air. As your hair absorbs this moisture, each strand expands and changes shape, creating the frizz you see.

Frizzy hair is one of the most common hair problems in humid parts of Australia, especially in the tropical north, such as Cairns and Darwin, where high humidity causes dry or damaged hair to seek out external moisture and swell and frizz.

Everyday habits can rob your hair of moisture and weaken the cuticle, making strands more susceptible to frizz. Common contributing factors include:

  • Excessive heat styling
  • Chemical treatments like bleaching or colouring
  • Over-washing or using products not suited to your hair type
  • Mechanical damage from brushing, towel-drying, or tight hairstyles
  • Certain hair types (like curly or coily) are more prone to dryness

How to prevent frizz before styling
Dryness is the leading culprit behind what causes frizzy hair, so it’s important to build a hair care routine around hydration.

Below, we’ll explain how to avoid frizzy hair with moisturising products that help smooth the cuticle, reduce friction, and protect your hair before styling.

1. Use a hydrating anti-frizz shampoo and conditioner
Start with a hydrating, sulfate-free shampoo that cleanses the hair and scalp without removing moisture. Then pair with a nourishing conditioner to help keep the cuticle smooth and prevent moisture loss that ultimately causes frizzy hair.

When shampooing, focus the product on your scalp, where oil, dirt, and product residue can build up. Follow with conditioner through your lengths and ends, where hair is usually driest.

We recommend that you avoid excessively hot showers, as hot water can lift the cuticle and make hair feel rougher. Instead, use lukewarm water to wash, and rinse your conditioner with cold water to help seal the cuticle.

2. Towel-dry hair with a microfibre towel
Your strands are most fragile when wet, which means rough towel-drying can lead to breakage and cause frizzy hair. Traditional cotton towels often have larger, rougher fibres that create friction against the hair cuticle.

A microfibre towel, on the other hand, has tightly woven fibres that absorb water quickly without disturbing the hair as much. Instead of harsh rubbing, gently squeeze or blot your hair to remove excess water.

3. Smooth and detangle with a leave-in conditioning spray
A leave-in conditioning spray helps soften, smooth, and detangle your hair before styling. This reduces pulling from your brush or comb, which can help limit frizz.

Formulated with our Dyson Oil7™ blend of seven omega-rich oils, Dyson Omega™ Leave-In Conditioning Spray is designed to be applied to damp hair to detangle and protect against breakage during styling. This nourishing, silicone-free formula hydrates your hair while helping protect against UV exposure and heat up to 230°C, reducing frizz and the appearance of split ends.

To apply, spray evenly through damp hair, focusing on your mid-lengths and ends. Then use a brush or comb to distribute the product before air-drying or blow-drying as desired.

4. Control frizz with a nourishing hair oil
A hair oil can help finish your pre-style routine by smoothing the cuticle and sealing in hydration with nourishing ingredients.

Dyson Omega™ Hydrating Hair Oil offers long-lasting frizz control with a concentrated blend of Dyson Oil7™. The weightless formula creates a shine-boosting seal that helps smooth flyaways without leaving hair feeling heavy.

Apply one to two drops to the palms of your hands, warm the oil between your fingers, then smooth through the mid-lengths and ends on damp or dry hair.

How to reduce frizz when styling
The catch-22 with styling frizzy hair is that many people use extreme heat to smooth it down – yet that same heat can disrupt the cuticle, making frizz harder to manage.

Read on to discover how Dyson frizz control technology helps you create frizz-free styles and maintain healthy hair.

1. Start with a pre-style cream to minimise frizz
Before you pick up a styling tool, start with a pre-style cream that supports hydration and gives your style hold.

Dyson Chitosan™ Pre-style cream is designed to create flexible, all-day hold while helping reduce unwanted frizz, even in high-humidity conditions. Its lightweight formula forms bonds around each strand to help hold your style without leaving hair feeling stiff or weighed down.

Because frizz looks different across hair types, our Chitosan™ Pre-style cream is available in four formulas:

Formula Best for
Dyson Chitosan™ Pre-style cream Straight to wavy light conditioning Fine, straight or slightly wavy hair that needs lightweight products that don’t weigh down strands
Dyson Chitosan™ Pre-style cream Straight to wavy rich conditioning Thick straight-to-wavy hair that’s prone to dryness and needs extra nourishment
Dyson Chitosan™ Pre-style cream Curly to coily light conditioning Finer curls that need definition but can be easily weighed down
Dyson Chitosan™ Pre-style cream Curly to coily rich conditioning Thick, damaged, or very curly or coily hair that needs richer moisture and stronger frizz control

2. Use low heat settings on your hair styling tool
When it comes time to style, use the lowest effective heat setting for your hair type. You want enough heat to shape the hair, but not so much that it leaves the cuticle feeling rough or raised.

A big part of how to control frizzy hair is choosing tools that work with airflow, not extreme heat. Dyson hair dryers and hair stylers use high-pressure airflow and intelligent heat control to measure and regulate temperature as you style, helping protect hair from heat damage while creating a smoother finish.

3. Blow-dry curly hair with a diffuser
If you have curly or coily hair, a diffuser can make a noticeable difference. Instead of blasting curls with direct airflow, a diffuser spreads air evenly through the hair, setting curls in their natural pattern with less frizz.

The Dyson Supersonic Nural™ hair dryer is designed to support different hair types, with five attachments to help you customise your styling routine.

When using your Dyson hair dryer for frizz on curly and coily hair, switch to the Wave+Curl diffuser attachment. This has two modes:

  • Dome mode – draws hair into the dome to help shape and define natural waves or curls with a smoother finish.
  • Diffuse mode – disperses airflow through the prongs to dry curls and coils at the roots, helping build volume and maintain texture.

4. Finish straight styles with a smoothing attachment

For straight or smoother styles, the right attachment can help guide the hair into place while reducing flyaways.

The Dyson Airstrait™ straightener and dryer dries and straightens hair at the same time, using focused airflow instead of hot plates. Air is projected downwards at a 45° angle to create tension through the hair, helping achieve a smooth finish with no heat damage.

For a softer, more voluminous blowout, the Dyson Airwrap Co-anda 2x™ multi-styler and dryer can help dry, shape, and smooth your hair with one tool. With six attachments, you can use the Dyson AirwrapTM for frizz to create everything from sleek finishes to lifted roots and bouncy movement, while using airflow to style without extreme heat.

For straight styles, we recommend finishing with the Airsmooth2xTM attachment to tame frizz and flyaways.

5. Seal the cuticle with the cool shot setting

Once you have created your desired finish, use the cool shot setting to help lock in your style. Featured in Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryers, Airstrait™, and Airwrap™ stylers, the cool shot instantly deactivates the heat element and delivers a burst of cool air to strands.

This helps seal the cuticles (which open during heat styling), flattening and smoothing them back down to prevent frizz after styling.
