How to use the Dyson Airwrap™ multi-styler for every hair type

Fine, thick, coily and curly hair types require different heat levels and styling methods. Siona Tebbutt, Lead Design Engineer at Dyson explains – “like skincare, it's important to find out what your hair type is to ensure you’re selecting the right tools, techniques and treatments to get the best results while taking care of your hair”.

Unique barrels in the Airwrap™ multi-styler have been engineered for different hair types, so that you can tailor your styling routine to your specific needs and style preferences. Ahead, see how to use Dyson Airwrap™ multi-styler on your hair type.

Dyson Airwrap™ multi-styler styling technology

Engineered for all hair types, the Dyson Airwrap uses powerful airflow instead of extreme heat to maintain hair health. Let’s walk through a Dyson Airwrap™ multi-styler technology to see how our haircare styler retains strength and shine whilst achieving everyday style.

Styles with airflow technology

As Dyson’s research into hair science shows, relying on extreme heat when styling can cause hair breakage and dullness. To solve this problem, Dyson engineers incorporated the enhanced Coanda airflow effect within the Dyson Airwrap™ multi-styler.

Instead of extreme heat, the Airwrap uses precise airflow to achieve wet-to-dry styling – preserving hair from unnecessary damage. As Jon Reyman, Global Styling Ambassador at Dyson explains, hair is especially fragile during the washing and styling stage. “Hair is weaker when wet and so is more vulnerable to damage. It’s essential to take extra care when working with hair when it’s still damp or wet”.

Controlled temperatures

Dyson’s specialist hair science laboratories spent years researching two key factors to styling – temperature and control. Overexposure to extreme heat (such as everyday styling with conventional stylers) can weaken the bonds in hair and make strands more prone to breakage.

To protect hair from styling-damage, our engineers have developed tools that deliver controlled styles without excessive heat. The Dyson Airwrap uses intelligent heat control technology, measuring the temperature over 40 times per second. It keeps the temperature under 150°C, which prevents exposure to extreme heat while styling. This means that whether you’re using the Dyson Airwrap on thick hair or fine, strand integrity is protected.

Attachments for optimal styling

The Dyson Airwrap™ includes a full set of 6 engineered barrel and brush attachments for controlled styling of thick, thin, fine, curly and coily hair.

Volume and shaping: If you have fine hair, the round brush attachments give you body and volume at the root, shaping the hair as it dries. For frizz-prone hair, switch to the smoothing brush for sleek, straight styles.

Curls and waves: Choose your barrel size to create tight, loose or bouncy curls for your hair length and density. Each barrel self-wraps the hair so you can curl in both directions for added definition and volume. Or curl in one direction for old Hollywood-style waves.

Flyaways: Set your wavy or straight styles with the smoothing attachment to reduce frizz and flyaways by up to 58%1. Smooth down the length of your hair for a glossy finish.

How to use Dyson Airwrap multi-styler on your hair type

Dyson-designed hair care attachments and accessories are researched and tested as thoroughly as Dyson machines. Using the right styling guides, attachments and technology for your hair type, can help protect strand integrity, colour, moisture, shine and smoothness.

  • Styling thick hair

Thick hair can take longer to style than medium or thin strands, but styles can typically hold for longer. If over-styled with heated tools, thick hair can become prone to dryness and frizz. By styling with the Dyson Airwrap™, thick hair can retain strength and avoid becoming coarse.

How to use Dyson Airwrap™ attachments

    • For waves or curls, take damp hair to the Airwrap 40mm barrels. Avoid the 20mm barrels if hair often feels coarse.
    • To add body and shape to hair while drying, brush with the Round volumising brush, starting from the scalp in sections and rolling once each section appears dry.
    • For a straighter style, use the Firm smoothing brush, moving through sections until dry. Use the cold shot for 10 seconds to lock style in place.

  • Styling thin hair

The timeframe required to style thinner hair is much shorter than with thick. However, fewer strand density will expose more extreme heat to individual strands. The Dyson Airwrap uses powerful airflow to minimise heat damage, while still delivering a voluminous look.

How to use Dyson Airwrap™ attachments

    • For bouncy, loose curls and waves, use the Airwrap 40mm Airwrap barrels or 40mm long Airwrap barrels if hair is longer. Starting with damp hair, introduce ends to arrows and allow hair to wrap. Switch off to release.
    • For sleek, straight hair, brush using the Soft smoothing brush, starting with wet hair and moving through sections until dry.
    • For volume, dry and brush hair simultaneously with the Round volumising brush, in sections and rolling once hair appears dry.

  • Styling fine hair

Fine hair can struggle to hold its shape after styling. Smaller strand diameter means that volume and long-lasting style can be hard to achieve. The Soft smoothing brush attachment on the Dyson Airwrap™ for fine hair is engineered to straighten out finer hair types without the use of extreme heat.

How to use Dyson Airwrap™ attachments

    • For defined curls or waves, wrap hair around either the 20mm barrels or 30mm barrels, beginning from damp ends and releasing by switching off. Those with fine hair should avoid the 40mm Airwrap barrel width.
    • For a straighter look, use the Soft smoothing brush through sections while hair is wet.
    • For body and shape in hair, use the Round volumising brush on wet hair, allowing the air to curl and dry hair.

  • Styling curly hair

Curly hair can vary in shape but each type can be prone to frizz and dryness. The Dyson Airwrap has a range of attachments engineered to shape and lengthen curly hair as it dries, without pulling or catching.

How to use Dyson Airwrap™ attachments

    • For a straighter style, use the Firm smoothing brush. Brush through sectioned and towel-dried hair, moving through until dry for a sleek and smooth finish.
    • For blow-dried body, use the Round volumising brush, taking through wet hair and curling slightly around the brush once you’ve reached the ends.
    • For added volume and length, opt for the Wide-tooth comb attachment. Dyson’s comb teeth are designed with soft curved tips to glide through curly hair, without catching. Start with sectioned hair on high heat and work your way up from ends to roots. This creates volume and texture. Repeat until all sections are dried.

  • Styling coily hair

Because this hair type can tangles easily, damage to coily hair can occur through styling. To promote hair health, work with damp hair and use the controlled benefits of the Dyson Airwrap brush attachments, which have been engineered to support this hair type.

How to use Dyson Airwrap™ attachments

    • For straightened hair, work in sections and with wet hair. Use the Firm smoothing brush, moving through each part gently and allowing the air to properly dry hair before stopping.
    • For volume and bounce, use the Round volumising brush, using the same technique as above.
